Oxford Research

Vertex is dedicated to creating transformative medicines for people with serious diseases. Supporting this strategy is a unique approach to Research and Development (R&D) designed to identify the targets, diseases, and tools to be successful.

We prioritise diseases where we understand the causal human biology of well-validated targets, discover/create biomarkers that translate from the bench to bedside, utilize a next generation approach to development and identify an efficient clinical and regulatory path.

Our Oxford Research site sits at the heart of this, providing scientists with high tech laboratories on Europe’s doorstep to drive drug discovery. Scientists at Vertex Oxford span the full spectrum of drug discovery disciplines, including human genetics, translatable models, high-throughput screening, structural biology, and medicinal chemistry. It has been home to our expert multi-disciplinary R&D teams since 1998.

We live and breathe managing our environmental footprint: 100% of our energy supply comes from renewable sources, we have sent zero waste to landfills over the past six years, we pioneered the green chemistry strategy that is now being implemented across the company, and we provide electric vehicle charging points that are free for employee use. At Vertex we foster a life-long love of science for young people in our community, with a focus on under-resourced students and those from groups underrepresented in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) careers. To support our community in Oxford we opened the Oxford Learning Lab in 2021.

About the Oxford Learning Lab

vat-vertex

Oxford Learning Lab programmes are designed to increase participation in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Maths) of students from under-represented backgrounds deepening their love of science and their understanding of the world of biotech. We launched the Oxford Learning Lab with virtual programmes in 2021 and welcomed students into the Learning Lab in 2022.

Vertex has had a long-standing commitment to partnering with local leaders, educators, and institutions to advance science education. Over the years, Vertex has engaged local students with a summer Work in Science Week which evolved in 2021 into a 3-week paid internship programme. Additionally, Vertex Volunteers have given back in local schools and the site has grown to have focused school year engagement programmes.

Oxford Learning Lab also forms part of Vertex’s broader commitment to improve inclusion, diversity and equity in the STEAM sector, including a £36.5 million investment globally through 2028 to equip under-resourced students to engage with STEM. The Oxford Learning Lab is part of the network of Vertex Learning Labs and is a key part of Vertex's engagement with the local community.
